Term Definition
Accessibility the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people who experience disabilities.
American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) an American not-for-profit performance rights organization that protects its members’ musical copyrights by monitoring public performances of their music, whether via a broadcast or live performance, and compensating them accordingly.
Broadcast Music International (BMI) an American performing rights organization the collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose work have been performed.
Content placement (aka product placement) a marketing technique in which references to specific brands or products are incorporated into another work, such as a film or television program, or other delivery systems, with specific promotional intent.
Copyright a legal right, existing globally in many countries, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to determine and decide whether, and under what conditions, this original work may be used by others.
Digital distribution (also referred to as content delivery, online distribution, or electronic software distribution (ESD), among others) is the delivery or distribution of digital media content such as audio, video, software and video games. The term is generally used to describe distribution over an online delivery medium, such as the Internet, thus bypassing physical distribution methods, such as paper, optical discs, and VHS videocassettes. The term online distribution is typically applied to freestanding products; downloadable add-ons for other products are more commonly known as downloadable content. With the advancement of network bandwidth capabilities, online distribution became prominent in the 21st century.
Digital formats a term specific to music and video such as .wav, .mp3, .mp4, .mov, .aiff, .wma, .flac, .aac, .ogg, etc. used for digital content delivery to online music stores, music distribution, and other music and production services.
E-commerce the activity of buying or selling of products on online services or over the Internet.
Intellectual property (IP) a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect, and primarily encompasses copyrights, patents, and trademarks. It also includes other types of rights, such as trade secrets, publicity rights, moral rights, and rights against unfair competition. Artistic works like music and literature, as well as some discoveries, inventions, words, phrases, symbols, and designs, can all be protected as intellectual property.
Library of Congress (LOC) the research library that officially serves the United States Congress and is the de facto national library of the United States. It is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States.
